NAHP Annual Scholarship Program

North American Hand Papermakers offers a limited number of scholarships to its annual conference for students/interns and for individuals. The scholarships are awarded upon application to people with demonstrated need who will benefit from conference attendance. NAHP scholarships allow students and others of modest means to participate in our conferences. If you would not otherwise be able to afford this year’s conference, perhaps a scholarship would help to make it possible.

Scholarships cover conference registration and the banquet when the conference is in-person. As available, limited travel funds may also be awarded to cover part of an applicant’s travel and lodging, and which will be paid to the applicant. Scholarships awards are prioritized 1) students making presentations at the conference (with partial or no institutional support), 2) students who are not receiving institutional support to attend, 3) regular presenters with no institutional support who would have difficulty presenting, and 4) any others who would be unable to attend due to finances and who would benefit their papermaking work or research from attending.

The application for scholarships opens each year a few weeks prior to conference registration. Applications are reviewed by the conference scholarship committee and awards are approved by the NAHP board which appropriates the funds. In addition, a limited number of scholarships are awarded to individual papermakers on the basis of need in memory of Barbara Bradley, a long-time member of the Friends of Dard Hunter and North American Hand Papermakers.

Scholarship Applicants must be 18 years of age and a current member of NAHP to apply for a scholarship. Please note that you are ineligible for consideration if you have received a NAHP/FDH scholarship within the last three years; you may not apply this year, although you may apply again after the three year waiting period. Selection is based upon the amount of funds available. If, in any given year, the number of applicants exceeds the amount of funds available, selections and travel awards will be made by the NAHP Executive Committee. All applicants will be notified in a timely manner after the deadline.

For general questions about the conference scholarships, contact conference@nahandpapermakers.org. We cannot offer scholarships without submission of an application.

The NAHP Scholarship Fund is supported by an annual silent auction held at the previous year’s banquet and by individual donations from members. (Members may make a donation online or may send a check to our mailing address.)
