Artist Statement:
As a fibers artist, I re-use, recycle, and up-cycle my materials; I challenge the materials to be pushed in different ways than would normally be expected of them, and from that, I reinvent traditional fibers processes. I see handmade papermaking as a process that involves collecting, undoing, and redoing. With these pieces, I offer at least 2 sides of major themes being examined in an age of isolation through the materials and through the process.
What are the facts when waking life and dreams seem to blur?
When we are cut off from human interaction, our reality is questioned. [F]acts is woven as a double cloth with handmade paper made from newspapers as the weft. This begs the question--what is true in isolation? Our thoughts, dreams, memories, and present can obscure us from knowing what is real. The verticality of the cotton warps resembles tallying to keep track of existence that is interwoven with reality.
What is the source of value and how does our perspective change when our circumstance changes?
The dandelion from Re[source]fulness is a reminder that everything is in the eye of the beholder. This piece was created from handmade paper from paper towels that had been used in a dye studio and usually discarded. These once one-use items can become prized possessions during isolation. Our perception of the common and mundane alters to be extraordinary in secluded situations.
Biography
Margaret Baggott is a fibers artist whose work comes from the idea of zero-waste. She is constantly creating and trying new techniques with scrap materials or supplies that others would have discarded. She works mostly with yarn as a weaver, knitter, and crocheter but also works with fabric making collages. She collects materials that are often second hand or the "waste" from other projects of her own. Her work finds the beauty, the oddity, or the truth through an old adage--waste not, want not.
