Artist Statement:
EROSION is my interpretation of today’s environmental problem. With the lack of rain and the many fires the planet is changing rapidly. I hope to bring even more awareness to global warming.

I use abstract concepts to express visual designs in a repetitive, textural and dimensional way. My pressed paper art is mostly inspired from nature. Since the 1980's my artworks have been created on artist-made, 100% cotton fiber paper. A collagraph is used to achieve deep embossing. The printing plate is run through an etching press and later the paper is hand colored with an airbrush, using fiber dyes.

Biography

Marjorie Tomchuk was born in Canada and educated in the United States. She earned a Master’s Degree in Art from the University of Michigan. For the past thirty years she experimented widely with artist-made paper.

Tomchuk’s art can be found in over thirty museums and educational institutions. About two hundred major corporations have her art in their collections. A book titled “ M. Tomchuk Graphic Work” was published in 1998. An award winning video on the artist and her work was created for Connecticut Public Television in 2000.

Her work has included editions of prints, mono-prints, cast paper and paintings on a large format (40” x 60”). All of these were created on 100% archival cotton paper. The artist has developed a signature style: she uses a collagraph to emboss an image and later this image is airbrushed with the use of fabric dyes as the color medium. Recent works display the artist’s own digital photographs collaged into hand made paper.
