Artist Statement:
Paper art is unique in its natural balance between strength and fragility. it is at once tender and light, strong and yet forgiving. Especially in its raw and undecorated state it expresses emotional depth and connection to a world beyond myself, both seen and unseen. When shaping paper it takes on its own process and expression, using my hands as tools to tell its own story. It is an exercise in allowing myself to surrender my preconceived notions about process and results, trusting the medium take command and to be my guide.

Dystopian events, past and present, ask me to give it voice in this medium. Mass immigration and detention of thousands of people is one of those events. It is haunting and real, calling to me to engage with it. Engagement requires me to not look away from a world that is difficult. I am able to connect with events I have little exposure to directly by using my hands and body to yield.
