Artist Statement:
Multidisciplinary artist Marjorie Fedyszyn applies meditative techniques and a wide range of materials to her abstract sculpture and installations. Discovering the luxurious and seductive qualities of over beaten abaca paper making in 2018, Fedyszyn pivoted from fiber art processes to paper making, applying many well practiced techniques to her paper sculptures. Fedyszyn’s art emerges from an intersection of identity and emotional memories tied to a loss of agency in her youth and a desire to regain control. She explores notions of loss, power, love and vulnerability as pivotal to navigating the human condition. Her sculptures express the emotional narratives of her past and tackle social issues like mental illness, childhood sexual abuse and the fragility of aging.
For over 30 years Fedyszyn has called Minneapolis, MN her home and has a studio in the historic Casket Arts Building there. She exhibits locally and nationally and has been awarded a number of grants and fellowships, including a Next Step Fund Grant to study paper making with paper master and artist, Jocelyn Chateauvert in 2019.
Home#46: Order/Chaos is an expression of the unpredictable volatility of my childhood home. When the situation turned angry which it often did, I would escape to the nearby beach on the shores of Lake Erie. Seeking refuge at the waters edge, I spent my time constructing large environments from the detritus washed upon the shore. The nest or cloud of paper thread can be interpreted in many ways. It has the illusion of floating and is grounded by a piece of shale from the beach near my childhood home. Seventy-two people contributed to the creation of over 7,800 yards of hand rolled abaca thread for this site specific installation. Home #46:Order/Chaos was created for the culminating exhibition of the MCAD-Jerome Early Career Fellowship at Minneapolis College of Art and Design Gallery in 2019.
