Sarah Bertrand-Hamel

Media: Cyanotypes on handmade paper (abaca, flax and kozo), thread, Plexiglas boxes and plinth

Artist Statement:
This piece consists of an assemblage of four paper works encased in thin Plexiglas boxes allowing the light to go through these translucent papers. Not unlike computer windows, luminous, open simultaneously and overlapping each other on the screen, these images coexist without necessarily composing a straightforward narrative. Their materiality, reinforced by the creases and the sewing, contrasts with the flatness of the images filling our visual field in this period, when probably more than ever before, we are turning to our screens to communicate and share our realities. By referencing computer technology using an analog printing process, I reflect upon the impressive change in speed at which images are produced, reproduced, and consumed.
