June Tyler
Apparition

Media:  Handmade paper from Kozo Willow structure
Size: 52” height, variable depth and width

Artist Statement:
For me, making art is an organic process. I am inspired by natural forms and forces: ocean waves and storms, ancient dwellings, covered with tree roots, eroded stones and wood, shells and bones.

My sculptural work begins with the careful selection of willow growing around my pond; straight and supple branches are best. For the paper pulp, I love using kozo with its beautiful fibers and translucency. When the sculpture is complete the paper appears to flow in and out of the willow, similar to the natural formation of cocoons or nests. In one of my sculptures, you will notice a small pressed “Nigelia” flower and a few sprigs of thyme from my garden.

The sculptures in this show were created during the pandemic when all other activity outside the home studio stopped and I was able to just focus on my work. It is my hope that you will see the natural currents flowing through the work.
