Lynn Sures
Shanidar I

Media:  Colored pencil drawing on artist-made sisal paper

Artist Statement:
The Shanidar cave in Kurdish Iraq is a rich source of ancient Neanderthal fossils, such as Shanidar 1. I am looking at Neanderthal fossils after learning that they were the first species of humans who used ochre as a pigment—hence the color of my sisal paper, and the palette of the drawing.
