Media: Relief sculpture, paper castings

Artist Statement:
I have found that papermaking has given me the opportunity to give new life to figurative sculpture.

In this current series I am using my designed plaster molds to cast pigmented paper pulp. I start with a clay material to sculpt the relief image and then cast this image in plaster. The paper pulp is then pigmented and patted into the mold. After drying the paper casting is removed and ready for my construction.

As part of my overall image I create paper using the Korean Joomchi method which creates some textural surface for my castings. I put these together on a board generally using wire to attach the castings to the board.

I hope to communicate to a broad audience with the intimate scale and timeliness of the work.
