Cell Cluster
Media: Handmade paper wire mesh dipped in high shrinkage abaca, attached abaca forms with burned markings, burned holes with text laminated, thread
Artist Statement:
In ‘Cell Cluster’ I assembled various sizes of paper spheres using several paper fibers including wire mesh dipped in Abaca paper pulp linking 'cells' with thread. My collection of spheres have different textures, burned marks, and laminated ‘burned holes’ from books. The burned holes have fragmented words showing just letters or sometimes symbols which reminded me of DNA sequences. In this pandemic era I felt it was synchronicity to include the those letters in my work.
My work is inspired from collage to create a contained chaos with an element of surprise. I love to make paper which always gives me new ideas and unusual possibilities. I try to push the boundaries of the traditional with the objective to create something new.
I am a maker, I am a process artist, I am an artist with aspiration to continue my creative journey with new discoveries and curiosities that lead me to more original and unique outcomes.
Biography
I am a papermaker and printmaker and often combine the two medias. After Graduating from CA State Long Beach with a BFA in printmaking, I worked as a printer for artists in Los Angeles, printing for Charles Bragg, Arthur Secunda, Marty Tobias, and others. I have attended many papermaking workshops in Long Beach, CA, Woman’s Studio, Peter’s Valley and Dard Hunter conferences. I have instructed papermaking in my studio and taught young adults with disabilities to create their top selling cards. From vessels, sculptures, to large flat sheets, I explore the art of making paper.
