Marjorie Fedyszyn
Bound Paper II

Media:
Artist made over-beaten abaca, muslin salvage strips, nymo thread, iron spikes

Artist Statement:
Because of the lack of agency as a child as stated above, the need to control all aspects of my life as an adult seemed a necessity. I have since learned we have authority only over the choices we make and everything else is simply an illusion.

In my studio I still try with great determination to control my materials and outcome  and learned quickly I had met my match in over-beaten abaca. Conceptually my goal was a series of accordion pleated panels. I glued, meticulously folded, hung and weighted each panel from the rafters of my studio over night. Returning the next day I discovered torn, warped, twisted and arresting panels of great beauty.

Working in abaca is a lesson in letting go and trusting the materials. Bound Paper II  gives the illusion of suspension between two fixed points but in reality it is a rigid panel of paper resting in place.
