Sue Carrie Drummond
Alterations
Media: Handmade paper with cotton blowouts on overbeaten abaca with screenprints
Statement:
This series considers how women must alter themselves during the process of marriage in order to fit into the expectations of a Wife. The lace garments in the foreground represent bridal clothes while the sewing patterns in the background represent the expectations a bride is expected to conform to.
Insidious Delicacy
Media: Handmade paper with watermarking and pulp paint
Statement:
I am intrigued by the way such delicate fabrics as lace have considerable strength to stretch and tug, enclosing the body in both comforting and discomforting ways. This conflict mimics the insidious aspects of performing femininity.
Continuous
Media: 10 shadow boxes containing fragments of overbeaten handmade abaca paper "mended" with hand crochet (5 pictured).
Statement:
I salvage waste sheets in the papermaking process and later work to mend them in an attempt to make them whole once more. The ongoing nature of this project speaks to the emotional labor and nurturing women are expected to perform in addition to their other tasks (begun in 2019).
